Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Grind the oats dry

Blend the rolled oats alone for 10-15 seconds until they form a fine flour.

  2. Load the blender

Add the milk, frozen banana, cocoa powder, protein powder, maple syrup, vanilla and salt. Add ice only if the banana is fresh.

  3. Blend until glossy

Blend on high for 45-60 seconds, stopping once to scrape the sides, until smooth and shiny.

  4. Adjust and serve

Thin with a splash of milk or thicken with ice as needed. Pour into a tall glass, dust with cocoa and serve, or rest 5 minutes for a thicker texture.

Note

Grinding the oats dry before adding liquid is essential for a silky texture. The smoothie thickens as it sits - shake with a splash of milk if refrigerated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I make this without protein powder?

Yes - use 1/2 cup Greek yogurt plus 1 extra tbsp cocoa and a splash more milk. Protein drops to about 15-18g.

Why is my smoothie grainy?

The oats were not ground fine enough. Blend them dry for 10-15 seconds first, and use rolled oats, not steel-cut.

Can I prep it the night before?

Yes - it thickens into a drinkable overnight-oats texture. Shake in a splash of milk in the morning.
